Win Stimson Centre's Indus Basin Science Fellowship

The Stimson Center in Washington is calling for applications for its new “Indus Basin Science Policy Visiting Fellows” program. It will select two young scientists, one from India and the other from Pakistan, for a fully-funded two month residency starting in mid-January at the Stimson Center’s Environmental Security Program in Washington.

New York, Oct 26 – The Stimson Center in Washington is calling for applications for its new “Indus Basin Science Policy Visiting Fellows” program. It will select two young scientists, one from India and the other from Pakistan, for a fully-funded two month residency starting in mid-January at the Stimson Center’s Environmental Security Program in Washington.

During this period, the visiting fellows will develop a joint project that addresses a specific research need or data gap that advances scientific understanding for water resource management in the Indus river basin. The visiting fellows will develop a strategy for communicating their results to decision makers in India and Pakistan. The fellows will be mentored and guided by Stimson’s environmental security program staff.

Funded by the Richard Lounsbery foundation, the fellowships come at a time when boosting scientific exchanges between India and Pakistan are fundamental to addressing vexed water security challenges facing the riparian nations.

The fellowship includes

  • A monthly stipend of $USD 2000 
  • Lodging costs in Washington DC and travel expenses within the US
  • Round-trip air travel between South Asia and Washington

Eligibility requirements

  • Applicant must be between 25-40 years of age
  • A citizen of and currently reside in Pakistan or India
  • Background in water management, hydrology, climate change or environmental sciences
  • Must possess a Master’s degree (or equivalent) and have experience in policy oriented activities. For non-academic candidates, an equivalent degree of professional achievement is expected.
  • Applicant must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Selection process
 
Fellows will be selected by the Stimson Environmental Security Program. Final selections will involve a peer review by an advisory committee of South Asian and US water experts.

  1. A letter of motivation.
  2. A concise proposal (maximum 400 words) written in English, for a joint research project to enhance the knowledge base for sustainable water resources management in the Indus Basin.
  3. A CV or résumé of no more than five pages.
  4. The names, titles and contact information (e-mail) of two professional and/or academic references.
  5. A declaration of honor confirming residence in India or Pakistan.

The deadline for submission is Friday, 8 November 2013.
