Packing is often a chore. Even if you’re set to begin an exciting journey that will take you to a distant corner of the world. In the stress of application, acceptance, and visas, it is easy to put packing down to the bottom of the list.

Last minute packing often results in one of the two things – overpacking : where you forget that you aren’t going into exile in a jungle; or underpacking, where you neglect carrying essentials, like toiletries, for treasured frames of your family.

One major tip is to start packing well in advance. This will control panic in the later stages. Secondly, check how much luggage you can carry, according to your airline’s rules. Now, what to pack?

  1. Passport

Most important are the documents you need to travel - do you have your passport/visa/money/acceptance letter from the University/ bank statements? Make a list of documents required. Keep them in a separate folder. This should be in your carryon luggage.

  2. Clothing

How’s the weather at your destination?  Extreme temperatures; hot/cold/rainy? Don’t carry more than necessary. You will get the most weather appropriate clothes at your destination (parkas, boots, etc). Pack enough to get you through travel and the first couple of weeks.  A down jacket is always a good idea for those winter weather destinations. An umbrella is useful anywhere in England. Two weeks of underwear is usually sufficient, and then add in jeans/t-shirts/sweaters/dresses accordingly.

  3. Technology

You will need your laptop/smartphone/usb stick/mp3 player. But most importantly, an adapter to plug everything in! This is important or all your gadgets will become useless. Are the plug sockets 2 pins or 3 pins? Grounded or otherwise? Check that you have the right adapter for the country you are traveling to.

  4. Bedding

Sheets/a good blanket/towels - always best to take these from home! Even if your accommodation says it provides linen.

  5. Basic Toiletries

Take what you need to get started: brush, toothpaste, mouthwash, face wash, lotion, soap, etc. Remember that you can buy more toiletries there.

  6. A Journal

A wonderful way of starting your journey is through keeping a diary!
