Our Heart And Soul
“Dream, my child dream, |
I shall make you what you wish to be.” |
Said a mother, silently embracing |
the new life in her. |
She had hope, she had a dream |
And she had promised herself, |
To walk all the miles and |
Cross the mountains and the sea! |
She had less money, that’s true |
But, a heart full of purity |
Dwelled in her too! |
A story so tragic, you would |
Never have heard! |
For once, open your heart |
And witness with me, |
a vivid tale of beauty! |
“Happiness will surround us, |
Things will be bright again |
Believe me, the future clearly I see |
Our child will take away all our pain!” |
“No, that’s not true! |
What I see, you can see too! |
Life will never be bright |
All our efforts will go in vain!” |
That was the scene, |
On one end stood hope, |
on the other end agony! |
Amidst them, stood the couple perplexed! |
“Our child will be with us, |
We are not alone!” |
“But, I fear for our child’s education, |
We have no money.” |
“You talk of education, I comprehend |
But, why so vexed? |
For our child’s education, |
We need no money.” |
“Your words make no sense! |
No money, no school, no education! |
Can’t you see? Not me, |
It’s you who is messed!” |
“You seem to be funny. |
Education is not merely in books. |
It’s a lot more! It’s in me, |
It’s in you, it’s in all the souls. |
Education is our values, our deeds, |
Our principles! Our child will not |
Merely inherit our genes, but also these! |
So, relax and cease giving me your angry looks!” |
“My love,Beautifully you say, |
But, how will we ‘all this’ execute?” |
“You anxious soul! Everything |
Will be fine. See through me, |
It’s a reality, not a mere reverie!” |
Fell the leaves of autumn, |
And stepped in a beautiful daughter, |
At whose sight, every string fell mute! |
As the little angel with her fragile legs toddled, |
Her mother tried in her to some values inculcate, |
For honesty, love, care and optimism |
Were the most precious jewels she felt. |
Both the parents toiled hard day and night, |
And sent their angel to the school on the hillside! |
Happiness and vibrant colours filled the air, |
As they worked with all their might! |
The lass read books with curious eyes, |
And visioned of actions great! |
“Mom, I will build a school |
And render free and quality education |
To all those, who can’t afford!” |
The mother proud fell short of words, |
Stroking her angel’s hair, said she, |
“Oh! So much these words of yours I adore!” |
Suddenly, erupted a volcano gigantic, |
Unfolding a tempest of grief, |
Their financial status deteriorated. |
Causing them to make a sacrifice |
Of what none of us will think, even in our dreams! |
From a two time meal, both of them switched to one! |
Keeping it from their child, they tried to survive, |
Merely on twigs, stems and at times even a bitter leaf! |
Their health was turning from pink to blue, |
And soon came the dusk, |
When they passed away due to flu! |
The lass wept and endlessly spent sleepless nights. |
But, she had valued the gift her parents had left behind. |
For, she knew it wasn’t the end, but a simple bend! |
There she stood amidst several diverging roads, |
Trying to ponder which one led to her goal! |
She continued with her studies |
And soon built a school, |
Her endeavour, her work, her perseverance |
made her dream come true. |
Well, It was the ‘education she received’ that made her life bright, |
For someone, somewhere said it right, |
Education is not merely in books, |
It’s in you, it’s in me, it’s in our heart and soul! |
In January, we ran a competition for all you students to enter - the first prize was a Samsung Galaxy Tablet - and the response we got was fantastic! Thanks to everyone who entered - and we look forward to your participation in our future contests - so keep an eye on our site!
The essay contest asked students aged between 16 and 18 to interpret a quote from the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, who said "The direction in which education starts a man [person], will determine his future life."
Now you can read what our winning contestants wrote!
