The months of June-August– 15 months prior to starting college in the USA- is the perfect time to start selecting universities and requesting applications.

A winning application is one that clearly and neatly provides ALL of the documents requested by the deadline date. It provides the admissions office an accurate picture of who the candidate is as a student. A winning application comes from a student who starts the process early. Remember the U.S. academic year begins in late August or early September. It is best to start the application process one year prior to an August entry.

Between August and November, attend university fairs. Many but not all universities require the SAT for admissions and most universities require the SAT for scholarship consideration. Also take the TOEFL or IELTS exams to show English Language Proficiency if required by the school to which you are applying.

The GRE or GMAT will be required for most graduate candidates. Talk to teachers, professors, or counselors about letters of recommendation – universities provide forms. Work on the personal essay – this is an opportunity to write in English and to describe goals as well as educational and personal background in a way that goes beyond the test scores and transcripts.

During the months of December-March pay attention to deadline dates. Fill out the applications, track application fee requirements and obtain official transcripts and translations if needed. Submit a winning application to at least six universities.
