For the fifteenth year, students from around the world will participate in one of the world’s most competitive trading competitions at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.
The Rotman International Trading Competition (RITC) has grown to include participation each year by teams from 52 different universities spanning the globe and spawned two regional Rotman trading competitions in South Korea and Italy.
This year’s edition will take place from February 22 to 24 in the Rotman School’s BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab. A team from Baruch College in New York City will attempt to win the competition for the third year in a row. Teams from 15 different countries will be participating.
The competition will utilize the Rotman Interactive Trader, an order-driven market simulator, which was developed in-house at the Rotman School. Teams will participate in various activities including electronic and outcry trading cases, seminars with industry practitioners, and social events with their fellow competitors.
“Given the challenge associated with each competition case, participants build models to apply theory, process information to separate the signal from the noise, quantify uncertainty and manage risks. Teams who combine those skills with good decision making do the best over the weekend.” says Prof. Tom McCurdy, the Bonham Chair in Finance, who is also the academic director of the lab and the competition.
BP Energy Company is the main gold sponsor of the competition and is also sponsoring the BP Commodities Trading Case. Other silver case sponsors include Flow Traders, MathWorks, S&P Global Market Intelligence, and Schonfeld Strategic Advisors. Bronze sponsors include OptionMetrics, WorldQuant, the Rotman Master of Financial Risk Management program, and TD Securities.
The Rotman School’s BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab is designed to promote experiential learning in the area of financial markets and data. The competition cases are implemented on the highly acclaimed Rotman Interactive Trader application, a market simulation tool being used in 60 universities and financial institutions around the world. The Lab is utilized by classes in many of the Rotman School’s programs including its Master of Finance, Master of Financial Risk Management, MBA and Rotman Commerce programs.
